Temperatures in the UK hit another record high, reaching 36.4C and breaking Wednesday’s record for the hottest ever June day.
NHS trusts have declared critical incidents, a hosepipe ban is in force in Kent, schools are closing early and the Met Office warned of "significant disruption to daily life".
Extreme temperatures have swept through large parts of western Europe too, with Paris soaring to more than 40C. French police have imposed a ban on drinking alcohol in public from midday Friday.
The UN said the "savage heatwave" showed what the climate crisis looked like in practice, warning "it's just getting started".
