A suicide bomber drove into his home in Kati according to a government spokesperson.
This was part of a wave of coordinated attacks by the Al Qaeda-linked JNIM islamists and the separatist FLA.
Both groups have been fighting the military government for years and now they’ve joined forces.
The Tuareg FLA claim they’ve regained control of Kidal and that the Malian military and Russian mercenaries have left.
Kidal was the unofficial headquarters of the FLA until the end of 2023.
Mali has a history of coups. It’s currently ruled by a military junta who seized back power after coups in 2020 and 2021.
