The campaign sparked controversy after Ramaswamy’s team aired an attack advert featuring Acton’s estranged mother, who accused her daughter of lying about her childhood.
The advert drew criticism from both Democrats and Republicans. Acton’s mother had lost custody of her children after her husband, Acton’s stepfather, was charged with raping the then 12-year-old Acton.
Acton is the first Democrat elected governor of Ohio since 2006.
