Performance enhancing drugs or PEDs won't teach you how to box, but they fix the hardest part of every training camp, the recovery. Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist boxer breaks down what performance enhancing drugs actually do for a fighter, why boxers risk their entire careers on them, and whether boxing applies its own doping rules fairly.
Taking these drugs is disgusting and dangerous, and anyone caught should get a lifetime ban. Tony stays honest about why some boxers choose to use PEDs, since the hardest part of a training camp isn't the training, it's the recovery. A fighter who recovers faster trains at 100 percent while everyone else drags themselves in at 60. You can't inject skill, but you can inject the time needed to build it, and over a 10 week camp that advantage compounds.
Breaking Down PEDs In Boxing:
What performance enhancing drugs actually do: nobody takes them to punch harder overnight. They speed up recovery, cut the risk of injuries, and let a fighter pile up more rounds and more quality training than a clean opponent can physically handle.
Why fighters risk everything: a boxing career is short, the margins between good and great are split seconds, and one injury can end it all. Tony's own career ended at 26 with holes in his knuckles and torn tendons, while he was still an undefeated professional in the prime of his life.
When the temptation is hardest to resist: if a doctor in 2012 had offered Tony a banned drug that would fix his hands and give him his career back, he believes he probably would have said no. But he's honest about how strong that pull is for a desperate fighter with no plan B, whether that's a millionaire world champion or a journeyman who can't afford to turn down a fight.
The Double Standard In Boxing's Drug Testing: when Canelo Alvarez tested positive for clenbuterol before the GGG rematch, he got a backdated six month ban. When Floyd Mayweather used an IV on the day of the Pacquiao fight, permission arrived two weeks later. Tony isn't calling either man guilty, but lower level fighters in the same situations get lengthy bans, and that means the rules aren't being applied evenly.
