Hard sparring is one of the most misunderstood parts of boxing training, often confused with reckless gym wars instead of a real technique with actual structure. Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist boxer, breaks down the real definition of hard sparring, when the intensity should actually go up, and why doing it too often can cause serious damage.
Real hard sparring is controlled and mutually agreed on, completely different from a reckless gym war where nobody learns anything and someone usually gets hurt. Technical sparring, done at around 60 to 80 percent intensity, should make up around 90 percent of your sparring even during an active fight camp. Hard sparring only becomes necessary once you have an actual fight booked, and even then twice a week in camp is plenty. Tony also shares one of the hardest sparring sessions of his own career, an eight round session against Mexico's champions that left him with a headache lasting two days, just weeks before a professional fight he went on to win.
