https://youtu.be/eTqHIwOvL0Y
Coach Frank Gilfeather has called the fully extended straight arm cross horrendous, powerless, and easy to counter in his own videos. Tony Jeffries, Olympic medalist boxer, teaches and defends that exact punch, and the two meet face to face inside Frank's Scottish gym to show how to throw the cross correctly and which version is actually stronger.
Frank is 80 years old, a former Scottish amateur champion, and has built a following of millions online teaching old school boxing fundamentals.
Breaking Down The Techniques:
The cross: Frank has called a fully extended straight arm cross powerless and easy to counter. Tony backs his version by naming Muhammad Ali, Canelo Alvarez, Floyd Mayweather, Dmitry Bivol, and Anthony Joshua as examples, fighters he says throw that exact extended cross at world level.
Arm strength: a straight arm holds firm against a push, while a bent arm gives way almost instantly, the same idea as snapping a pencil straight versus bent.
Frank's own cross: shorter and closer range, a technique he has thrown since he was four years old, traced back to studying Joe Louis.
Fighter build: taller, longer range fighters benefit from staying extended, the same logic behind Muhammad Ali building a career on distance boxing. Shorter fighters can generate real power pulling the punch in tighter instead.
