Wednesday marks the third anniversary of the October 7 terror attacks.
Three years ago, at dawn, thousands of Hamas militants breached the Gaza-Israeli border, killing 1,200 Israeli citizens while 251 others were taken hostage and hidden deep in tunnels across the enclave.
Israel's response changed the Middle East: Gaza is in ruins, and the UN puts the death toll at 70,000 Palestinians killed in the conflict, including 20,000 children.
Matt Doran is the ABC's Middle East correspondent and spoke to 7.30's Sarah Ferguson.
