In this special extended edition of 7.30, Australia is coming to terms with the horrific attack on federal independent MP Helen Haines outside her electoral office in Wangaratta on Monday afternoon.
For decades, Helen Haines has served her community in northeastern Victoria as a nurse, midwife, medical researcher and, since 2019, an independent MP.
In an increasingly polarised political world, she is widely celebrated for her fairness, decency and integrity. Now she's surrounded by her family in the Alfred Hospital after undergoing urgent surgery, while her alleged attacker has since been charged by police.
Could this be a turning point for Australia?
