From Julius Caesar's assassination to the reign of the last of the "Five Good Emperors," Commodus, this video explores the first two centuries of the Roman Empire. We look at how Augustus transformed Rome from a republic into a powerful empire, creating a system that would last for centuries. We also cover the Julio-Claudian and Flavian dynasties, touching on key figures like the tyrannical Nero and the builder of the Colosseum, Vespasian. The summary highlights the era of the "Five Good Emperors" as a golden age of peace and prosperity, but reveals the underlying problems that would eventually lead to the empire's decline, starting with the chaotic rule of Commodus and the onset of a devastating plague.
