This Little Chord Grip Creates Great Riffage
This is one of those chord voicing ideas that naturally turns into a riff the moment you start playing with it. Start with a D barre chord using the A shape at the fifth fret, then shift your index finger to cover just a portion of the chord and you've got this tight, punchy little cluster of notes on the middle strings that feels completely different.
The move back and forth between the full chord and that tighter voicing is where the riff starts to emerge. Add in the 10th fret on the A string for a little extra texture and it gets even more interesting. Then scoot the whole idea up to G and you've instantly got another version of the same riff in a new key.
One grip, endless variations. Go mess around with that.
