Sex worker's voices missing from PNG’s HIV crisis | The Pacific
Over 120,000 people in Papua New Guinea are living with HIV. A surge in cases drove the government to declare a national HIV emergency in 2025.
PNG has a long history with HIV and AIDS. Cases spiked in the late 1990s and by the early 2000s, it was the leading cause of death at Port Moresby General Hospital.
But beyond the numbers, we spoke to women working in the sex trade about stigma, limited access to protection and treatment - and why they've been left out of the national response.
Reporter Belinda Kora and producer Johnson Raela looks at how years of neglect and underfunding have driven one of the region's most serious health crises.
‘The Pacific’ is hosted by Johnson Raela and Alice Lolohea.
