Marie-Louise von Motesiczky is now recognised as one of the most important Austrian painters of the 20th century, though she spent most of her life in England.
Fleeing the arrival of the National Socialists into Austria in 1938, she moved from her home city of Vienna and eventually settled in London. Here she became involved in a vibrant émigré network of artists, writers and thinkers.
Over a career spanning seven decades, von Motesiczky created more than three hundred paintings, including powerful and unflinching portraits of her friends, family – and herself.
In this film she’s remembered by her friends (including artist Edmund de Waal) as well as her sitters, biographer and former lodger.
