Florence Nightingale was born today in 1820. She was the founder of modern nursing and a pioneering statistician, using data to show that most war deaths occurred from disease. She created an early pie chart to prove it, and said: ‘It should affect through the eyes what we fail to convey to the… public through their word-proof ears.’ Adam Rutherford investigates.
