Japan's Hikikomori Are F*cked
Japan’s hikikomori are facing a terrifying deadline. More than a million people have withdrawn from society, some for decades, surviving almost entirely because aging parents provide them with food, housing, and financial support. But those parents won’t be there forever.
This video explores Japan’s growing hikikomori crisis and what happens when socially isolated adults suddenly lose the only support system they have ever known. We examine the disturbing case of a 46-year-old man who lived alongside his dead mother for more than a year, the growing number of middle-aged hikikomori, and why women may represent a much larger share of the crisis than stereotypes suggest.
But this isn’t only Japan’s problem. Rising housing costs, unstable employment, remote work, social isolation, and endless screen time are creating similar patterns among Millennials and Gen Z across the United States, United Kingdom, South Korea, and beyond.
Governments are experimenting with counseling, financial incentives, and even Japan’s unusual “rent-a-sister” programs to bring people back into society. The real crisis begins when the parents supporting this lost generation are gone.
