Recruits are joining the military in big numbers, but not for the reason Secretary Hegseth says

Secretary Pete Hegseth has repeatedly elevated military recruiting successes into the marquee achievement of his tenure and framed improved enlistment numbers as a reflection of confidence in the administration.

But interviews conducted by ABC News with nearly 40 recruits found that the reasons behind the improved numbers are less political than Hegseth suggests.
