A train around an active volcano | DW Documentary
For almost 120 years, the Circumetnea has been circling Mount Etna, passing through two nature parks and constantly changing vegetation zones, with the UNESCO-listed volcano often in view. Following the closure of much of Sicily’s narrow-gauge network, it is now the island’s last remaining narrow-gauge railway.
Most of Etna’s eruptions stay close to the crater and rarely threaten people or animals, although more violent eruptions can send ash and rock high into the atmosphere and lava down into the valley. The railway itself reflects that history: parts of the line have had to be rebuilt several times.
