Restoring Foam with Heat
Did you know a flattened foam cushion can spring back to life with just a hair dryer? It’s not magic — it’s science. Many foams, like polyurethane, have a “shape memory effect.” During manufacturing, a grid of tiny air pockets is formed, and when the foam cools, its polymer chains become locked into that original puffy shape.
When the foam is compressed over a long period of time, the grid structure gets squashed and at room temperature the chains can’t move back. But when you apply heat, the polymers regain mobility, letting the foam return to its memorized shape.
But if the foam’s structure is severely damaged, heat won’t restore it.
