Why the mullahs were promoting condoms in Iran in 2000 | Foreign Correspondent archives
When Iran's fundamentalist mullahs seized power back in 1979, they urged the country to go forth and procreate.
They wanted lots of young revolutionaries, and they wanted them immediately. However, the country took to the command a little too enthusiastically and 20 years later, Iran had a massive population problem.
In the year 2000, Foreign Correspondent's Mark Corcoran investigated how the mullahs, in a remarkable display of political pragmatism, did a complete about-face and instituted one of the world's most enlightened population control programs.
This episode was aired on ABC's Foreign Correspondent in the year 2000.
