My First Week at Ocean Falls, BC. Finding the Hidden History of Cousins Inlet. Destination Adventure
If you are a fan of the abandoned, URBEX or history, there is a good chance you have heard of Ocean Falls. This once thriving city now sits mostly in ruin, at the end of Cousins Inlet, a remote pocket along the British Columbia coastline. What you may not know, is that there is still a community of people living here, enjoying life and the spoils of a rarely visited land. The weather is harsh, access is challenging, but for the folks tough enough to push through it, life is great.
Just sixty years ago, Ocean falls was a booming Mill town, with a population close to 5000 people, and a neighbouring suburb called Martin Valley. Today the city, and its history is largely forgotten, and that is what I am here to try and chase down. There is a speckling of remains up and down the coastline of cousins inlet, and one day at a time I hope to uncover as much as possible.
Of course, being as remote as this is, access in and out is only possible once per week, so supplies are critical, and harvesting will help make our stay comfortable and successful. We brought with us some fishing gear, crabbing and shrimping gear, and between harvesting and exploring we should be able to cover a lot of territory here. The first couple of days crabbing are looking very promising, and the discoveries along the ocean are abundant.
All in all, I anticipate this will be an incredible adventure season.
