Man Lost Hard Drive with 8000 Bitcoin
James Howells, a computer engineer from Wales, has ended a 12-year search for a hard drive containing the private keys to 8,000 Bitcoin, which he accidentally discarded in 2013 during a home clean up.
8000 bitcoin in 2013 would be worth around $8 million dollars, but would be worth around $913 million, as of August 2025. James has spent countless hours and £2million pounds searching for it over the last 12 years, which was believed to be buried in a Newport landfill.
The landfill is estimated to be 15 meters deep with 200,000 tons of waste, making recovery highly impractical. Despite offering 30% of the recovered funds to the city and residents, logistical challenges and regulatory barriers brought the search to a close.
If he had put that $2 million pounds into BITCOIN in 2013 rather than solicitors fees, he would be have around £307million pounds today.
