The British living room was completely transformed during the 1950s, moving from post-war austerity and drabness (dark colors, old furniture, sooty fireplaces) to modern affluence and vibrant design. This revolution was driven by new petrochemical-based materials like PVA paint, foam cushioning, and nylon carpet, which, along with the introduction of the television and the DIY revolution, made homes brighter, cleaner, more comfortable, and a hub for family life and entertaining.
