Artifacts tell a story, with some endings more somber than others. At the @NationalParkService's museum conservation lab, Adam Savage examines a Civil War kepi that belonged to Lt. James Roantree, a second lieutenant of the 43rd U.S. Colored Troops who was fatally shot in 1864. Objects conservator intern Sutton Hastman walks Adam through the extensive measures to preserve Lt. Roantree's hat (which still bears the mark of the lethal bullet) and teaches Adam the hot welding technique she used as part of her treatment.
