President Trump has threatened that if Iran "violently kills peaceful protestors" the US will "come to their rescue", declaring "we are locked and loaded, ready to go".
Iranian officials warned that any interference by the US would cross a "red line".
Seven people have reportedly been killed in clashes with security forces, as protests continue across Iran for a sixth day.
