Why Russia may be the biggest winner from the Iran war | 7.30
As the world grapples with the impact of what's being described as the biggest ever shock to world energy markets, one winner has emerged from the mayhem: Russia's Vladimir Putin.
"The war in Iran is pretty good business for President Putin," Alexander Kolyandr from the Centre for European Policy Analysis told 7.30.
"Russia is probably the main, if not the only winner of the war against Iran."
For more than three years Russia's oil exports have faced sanctions which placed a price cap on how much Moscow could charge for oil.
The sanctions, enforced by the G7, the EU and Australia, are aimed at limiting Moscow's earnings to fund its war in Ukraine.
But last month, with oil prices skyrocketing due to the Iran war and the near closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the US changed course.
It temporarily waived sanctions on Russian oil that had already been loaded onto tankers for export. Norman Hermant reports.
