11 arrests at Maccabi Tel Aviv-Aston Villa game
Police in Birmingham made 11 arrests last night - as hundreds protested outside Aston Villa's match against the Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Pro-Palestine and pro-Israel demonstrators were kept largely separate - but some pockets of violence erupted.
The fixture had sparked controversy after Maccabi fans were banned from attending by local authorities. West Midlands Police Superintendent Tom Joyce yesterday claimed that decision was primarily due to 'significant levels of hooliganism' within the club's fanbase.
