This is no baby BMW. The New M2 CS Review | Henry Catchpole - The Driver’s Seat
The new BMW M2 CS is the ultimate version of BMW’s baby M car… except there is nothing babyish about it. With 523bhp and 479lb ft of torque going to the rear wheels and a 0-62mph time of just 3.8 seconds, it is a serious performance car. To prove the point, Henry Catchpole compares it to some other (mostly Hot Wheels) machinery.
Also along for the journey in this film is a rather special BMW 2002 - an ancestor of the M2. Belonging to William Beaumont, the Editor of Werke magazine - https://werke.site/ - it is a fabulous personal build that imagines what a CSL version of the 2002 might have been like. The details and the sound make it worthy of a full-blown commercial restomod, while the Bilstein suspension makes it feel like a little race car on the road.
Talking of the CSL classification, the M2 CS takes the dampers from its big brother, the M4 CSL. Not that you’d find that out from the spec sheet, which is curiously quiet on the changes that have been made to the suspension etc. A ride height dropped by 8mm, new lightweight forged wheels and more camber on the front end is just the start. However, we also tackle one other absence from the spec sheet - a manual gearbox.
With a price tag of around $100,000 or £86,000 the new BMW M2 CS is an undeniably expensive proposition, but it really does feel worth it. The looks haven’t changed hugely from the M2 but the addition of the ducktail spoiler on the carbon boot lid balances out the muscularity of the arches and the burly front end, realising the original vision seen in the design sketches of Jose Casas. The interior is also a lovely place to be and has a mix of the everyday and the more special; Some practicality has been retained with the rear seats but some practicality has also been lost in the new lightweight centre console that does without an arm rest or cup holder.
