Professor Richard Scolyer on the need for more funding for brain cancer | 7.30
Professor Richard Scolyer was part of a world-leading duo with Professor Georgina Long that changed the treatment of melanoma using immunotherapy, dramatically improving survival rates.
Then in 2023, Scolyer himself was diagnosed with brain cancer — the cancer with one of the lowest survival rates — which has barely improved in more than 20 years.
Scolyer has undergone experimental treatment based on the team's previous research on immunotherapy, as well as more conventional treatments.
Clinical trials may follow from this, but in the meantime, Scolyer — despite the force of the disease — maintains a public profile, making a heartfelt plea for more funding for brain cancer research. He spoke to 7.30's Sarah Ferguson.
