The Creation Of NATO, Explained Under 5 Minutes
As the Soviet Union expands its influence in Eastern and Central Europe, the threat of an attack on the remaining free nations of the continent looms large. To counter this, representatives from Western Europe meet with the U.S. Secretary of State to create the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The pact, signed by 12 nations, states that an attack on one member is an attack on all, uniting their armed forces and providing access to American military technology. This move is seen as a threat by the USSR, which in response creates its own military alliance, the Warsaw Pact, in 1955. This period marks a new stage in the Cold War, characterized by military buildups, psychological warfare, and a constant state of tension between the two blocs.
