Mass Protests in Iran Take a Deadly Turn — Will Trump Respond?
An Islamic nation plunged into chaos as anti-government protestors take to the streets over the nation’s severely battered economy. Why are there mass protests in Iran? And could the government’s deadly response lead to US intervention?
Prices for food and other bare necessities have skyrocketed in the Islamic nation, with the inflation rate sharply rising to 42.2% compared to 2024. Iran also bumped up gas prices for the first time since 2019, which was met with anger from the public. Tensions flared in Tehran and several other cities across the country all while security forces led by Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei tried to maintain control.
President Trump has also vowed to help protestors, issuing a vague promise of support of peaceful demonstrations erupting in Iran. In a nearly 3 am Truth Social post on Jan, 2, Trump posted: “If Iran shoots and violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue. We are locked and loaded and ready to go."
