The job of a harbor pilot boarding and disembarking ships, is one of the most dangerous yet essential tasks in the shipping industry.
These pilots are responsible for guiding massive cargo ships, tankers, and cruise liners safely into and out of harbors, through narrow channels, and past hazards.
They must board and leave moving ships at sea, often under treacherous conditions on nothing more than a rope ladder with no safety line.
In busy or hazardous ports (such as San Francisco, New York or Los Angeles), pilots can earn between four hundred to size hundred thousand per year.
