Why They Remove Rubber From Runways
Each time a plane lands on a runway, friction rapidly spins the tires up to landing speed, leaving behind a layer of rubber. As rubber accumulates on the runway, it reduces friction and increases the risk of hydroplaning during wet conditions.
Some airports use a specialized car with a wheel that measures runway friction as it drives and the results determine whether cleaning is needed.
Airports remove the rubber buildup three to five times a week using chemical cleaners, high-pressure water jets and mechanical scrubbers.
Once the tarmac has been cleaned, high-pressure water jets will be used on the runway lights, to clean off any leftover rubber.
During the cleaning process, the rubber is usually collected along with waste water and cleaning agents and treated before disposal.
All this work ensures a plane touches down smoothly, with tires gripping the runway for a safe landing
