The Red Beach of Hormuz Island, is about as close as you’ll ever get to standing on another planet. The striking red colour comes from iron oxide-rich soil also known as ochre, formed from the island’s volcanic past, giving the beach an otherworldly appearance.
Over millions of years, erosion and weathering broke down iron-rich rocks, depositing fine ochre sediment along the coast. If you scrape back the sand on the beach you will find the bright red coloured sand underneath.
Throughout the day, the beach shifts in appearance as sunlight interacts with the iron-rich grains, creating a surreal landscape that changes in tone and intensity.
