How firing their own weapons has put Australia’s soldiers at risk of brain injury
The physical and mental scars of war are well-documented, but only now are medical researchers starting to understand the grave neurological risks to soldiers.
One of the major concerns is the brain injuries seen in troops repeatedly exposed to blasts from their own weapons — even in training — and the alarming links to suicide.
Veterans say the Australian Army has failed to protect soldiers from brain injuries caused by the blasts from firing their own weapons.
Now, the Chief of Army has said more needs to be done after a series of reports on the ABC exposing the suffering of former and serving Defence Force members.
This is the Kennedy award-winning investigation by ABC National Health Reporter Elise Worthington.
