Off Grid Paradise, With a Heavy Dose of Winter. What it Takes to Survive the Cold.
It is no Question that living in the north brings with it some challenges, and that is even more apparent living off grid. Keeping systems functioning, water from freezing and the fire fully stocked, is nearly a full time job on its own. But there is no better feeling than being cozy and warm inside, looking out at the effects of harsh winter taking place.
Watching the seasonal changes happen on this mighty Fraser River has brought me endless fascination, and seeing the ice begin to build is an exciting time. It should only be a week or so until we are experiencing complete blockages soon, and that is a wild experience. Of course this will be filmed best on a drone, so its a good thing I was able to retrieve mine... and my spare. hahaha
The water system I built for the house was a bit of a risk no doubt, because it was only theoretical, it was untested and it is not removable. I am happy to say, it is all working very nicely, and what a luxury it is in my life to have reliable long term water storage. This system is designed to hold 2000 litres, but after using it for a couple of weeks, I don't believe that much is necessary, so I am considering taking out the top tank
