Recreating A Day In The Life Of Rural Victorian Bakers
Four modern baking professionals go back in time to the early Victorian era to discover the origins of their $4 billion industry. They face the grueling 9-hour shifts, primitive tools, and backbreaking labor of a rural community bake house. From mixing dough by hand and using brewer's yeast to the shock of lifting 20-stone flour sacks, they recreate the bread that was the staple of the working class. This journey explores the taste of forgotten heritage wheat, the stark reality of poverty (including eating 'chicken feed'), and the simple, yet hard, life of the people who fed the nation before the Industrial Revolution changed their world forever.
