In 2026, Waymo is also set to deploy a new generation of Zeekr vehicles, which likewise will not have a steering wheel, just like the Tesla Cybercab. Oh my goodness! That’s absolutely crazy!
Based on the latest updates, that is correct: Waymo’s next-generation Zeekr models, according to the company’s original plan, are designed as purpose-built robotaxis with no steering wheel or pedals at all. However, given the ambition to keep pace with Tesla Cybercab’s planned launch in early 2026, that goal now seems impossible.

At present, Tesla’s Cybercab robotaxi appears to be further ahead, already operating real-world trips on public roads. If you pay a bit of attention, you’ll definitely notice that they drive better than all the other so-called highway “heroes” in Austin.
As of the time we released this episode, Tesla has only reached a relatively small fleet scale, with just over 135 robotaxis since June of this year. However, the entire fleet has already accumulated 550,000 miles of autonomous driving, and the fully self-driving robotaxi program (unsupervised, with no safety monitor) is now being widely used in two major cities: Austin, Texas, and the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
For a program that has been officially operating for less than six months, these numbers are absolutely insane.

In contrast to Tesla, Waymo and Zeekr currently face a significant gap between their original vehicle designs and the real-world experimental versions that are actually being tested.
Originally, the concept behind the Waymo–Zeekr collaboration was to create a vehicle that completely eliminated the traditional driver’s area. In the future commercial version, passengers would step into a spacious cabin with no driver’s seat, no steering wheel, and no accelerator or brake pedals. However, this idea was officially announced by the two companies back in December 2021. And after five years, it still remains at the concept stage.
The versions currently undergoing real-world testing on public streets—such as those in San Francisco—are still equipped with a standard steering wheel. In reality, we have yet to see a single Zeekr vehicle without a steering wheel appear at all, let alone one that has been tested thoroughly enough for a safe public launch next year.
