Ostia Antica - Rome's Imperial Seaport | Guided tour with historian Dr Eireann Marshall
By 150 CE, when the Roman Empire controlled the Mediterranean, Ostia had become a bustling commercial hub of around 60,000 residents, serving as Rome's principal port.
Situated approximately 20 miles down the Tiber from the Roman Forum, Ostia boasted an impressively advanced urban infrastructure for its time. Today, many of its buildings – ranging from grand public spaces to everyday homes – remain remarkably well-preserved, offering a compelling glimpse into daily life in an ancient Roman port.
In this video, Dr Eireann Marshall takes us on a guided tour through this expansive but less-visited archaeological site, that has often been overshadowed by the more well-known Cities of Vesuvius.
